KNOW THE CULTURE

Q&A

The questions every newcomer to the cypher asks.

What's the difference between "breakdancing" and "breaking"?

"Breaking" (or B-boying / B-girling) is the term used by the culture itself. "Breakdancing" was coined by the media in the 1980s. Purists always say breaking — it's the original name born in the Bronx in the 1970s.

Is breaking really an Olympic sport now?

Yes. Breaking made its Olympic debut at Paris 2024, with 16 B-Boys and 16 B-Girls battling head-to-head. Phil Wizard (Canada) and Ami (Japan) took the first-ever gold medals.

What are the four core elements of a breaking set?

Top rock (standing footwork), down rock / footwork (floor patterns), power moves (windmills, flares, headspins) and freezes (frozen poses). A great bboy blends all four with musicality.

How are battles actually judged?

Judges score across criteria like technique, variety, execution, musicality, and originality. Under the WDSF Olympic system, a "Trivium" of physical, artistic and interpretive qualities is scored by a panel using real-time sliders.

What's the biggest event in breaking?

The Red Bull BC One World Final is the most prestigious 1-vs-1 title. For crews, the Battle of the Year and UK B-Boy Championships are legendary. And now, the Olympics.

How do I get started as a beginner?

Find your local cypher or a breaking studio, learn your top rock and a basic 6-step, and drill your foundation before chasing power moves. Culture first, tricks second — respect the cypher and the pioneers who built it.
